Education is vital and essential in today’s society for various reasons. Firstly, education provides the opportunity to acquire specialized knowledge and skills in a specific field. This enables learners to prepare for a specific career and gain the necessary knowledge to succeed in that field.

Education also offers the opportunity to build professional networks and get to know potential employers. This can facilitate the transition from education to the job market and increase the chances of professional success.

Future-oriented education

In Germany, according to the Vocational Training Act, there is a list of 331 professions from various sectors such as craftsmanship, agriculture, industry, and services that can only be accessed through apprenticeship. This system is much more transparent for students and companies in terms of professions, skills, and salaries.

There are two types of vocational training:

Vocational Training / Practical Internship in Educational Institutions

In this type of training (schulische Ausbildung), the focus is purely theoretical, with a requirement for self-financing (a blocked account or guarantee). This type of training generally lasts from one to three years. It is offered by both public and private schools, with private schools often charging tuition fees. Unlike dual vocational training (duale Ausbildung), you will not receive a fixed salary during this training.
However, you will learn theory and practice in vocational schools (Berufsfachschule or Berufskolleg). This is what’s called dual education. The training is supplemented with internships in companies or social and medical institutions, where you can apply the knowledge acquired in school. This exists especially for healthcare professions such as Pflegefachfrau/-mann, as well as in technical or commercial sectors like Fachinformatiker/in, Kauffrau/-mann für Büromanagement, Kauffrau/-mann im Einzelhandel.

In dual vocational training (duale Ausbildung), apprentices are paid based on their specialties, with salaries ranging from 620 to about 1200 euros.

Dual Studies with Professional Orientation (Duales Studium)

Dual studies with integrated vocational training (Ausbildungsintegriertes duales Studium) are a unique type of higher education. They combine studies at a higher education institution (Hochschule or Berufsakademie) with apprenticeship in a company. At the end of this program, you receive two degrees: the first is granted by your university (Bachelor or Master), and the second by the company. This type of program is mainly offered in commercial, technical, and health sectors, such as nursing, mechanical engineering, or computer science.

Dual studies (Duales Studium) are less theoretical than traditional higher education. In addition to the theory taught at the university, students gain practical experience in the company through vocational training. Their extensive practical experience opens up excellent opportunities in the job market and their profession. Similar to apprentices in dual vocational training (duale Ausbildung), they receive a salary during the time spent in the company.

This program generally lasts from three to five years. The vocational training component is often reduced to two years to allow enough time for higher education studies. To be admitted to this type of program, you must have a diploma qualifying for higher education (Baccalauréat). In the case of dual studies (Duales Studium), the Baccalauréat is mandatory, but it is mostly preferable in the case of dual vocational training (duale Ausbildung).

However, for regulated professions in dual vocational training (duale Ausbildung) such as Pflegefachkraft, Laborant/ -in, Chemikant/ -in, you should first try to have your foreign diplomas or school level recognized in Germany. Recognition brings significant advantages for your life in Germany, helping you quickly find a permanent position in the country.
